Most people don't give much thought to lighting, especially lamps. They consider their aesthetics and if they compliment the rest of the décor. However, have you really given much thought to the light that a lamp produces? Inventor and Industrial Designer Jake Dyson does, which is how he was inspired to create the first variable angle uplight.

Dyson's Motorlight lets you control both the angle and concentration of light in this uplight-style lamp. Basically, an uplight directs the light source upwards, creating a softer – less harsh light – because the light is reflected off of the ceiling. Light is important to our environment, despite our almost mundane relationship with it. Lamps especially are a great way to set a mood or give energy to a space, because they are portable. Unfortunately, your average lamp really only allows you one style and intensity of light. If you're lucky, you might have a lamp with a 3-way bulb, but you're still stuck with the same shape of light. The Motorlight not only allows you to control the concentration of light, it can also cycle through continually adjusting angles of illumination. When you have control of the light, you are also able to manipulate the feel of the entire room.

Jake Dyson feels that "Lighting can be surprisingly limited: either spots, floods, uplighters or ambient. You make a choice and then you have to stick to it. So I set about developing a versatile and diverse light, which became Motorlight. It's functional and flexible – rooms can feel like they're lifting and breathing, or pinpointing a precise angle."

This ultramodern lamp is comprised of a molded outer shell of UV stabilized high-grade polycarbonate. The interior components – which include a capsule reflector – are super-pure clad aluminum, contributing to the purity and brightness of the light that the Motorlight emits. Finally, the base guide tube and cam wheel are made of aircraft grade aluminum. This is definitely a far cry from the table lamp that you read your local newspaper by, and you're not going to be able to find these parts at your local home improvement store. At approximately $800 U.S. dollars (£495), the Motorlight is a high-quality light source for design-conscious people who appreciate what light can do to make a room look more appealing. The Motorlight is a high-end adaptation on a commonplace object that can change the look and feel of an entire space with a twist of a button.

Like a valuable print that you might want to illuminate, the Motorlight is produced in exclusive batches of 500 units. Available in White, Gloss, Black Gloss, Red Glow, Blue Glow and Clear Glow, the Motorlight can be purchased by contacting info@jakedyson.com or by visiting www.JakeDyson.com.
